Knee Deep in Kowloon

Kowloon, or 九龍 'Nine Dragons' is a peninsula closed in the north and northeast by a hill range called Lion's Rock, formed by eight peaks: from west to east, Eagle's Nest, Beacon Hill, Lion's Rock, Temple hill, Tate's Cairn, Tung Shan and Kowloon Peak. Of course, the etymology of the place name has a relationship with these 8 hills.

The area is not easy to grasp. Like in Hong Kong island, the flat densely packed streets around Nathan Road are followed by hills with fewer residential buildings. The atmosphere in areas like Sham Shui Po, Mongkok and Yau Ma Tei is fascinating, but there is much more than that in the second oldest area in Hong Kong, much less western-style than Hong Kong Island.

You can discover the most interesting corners of 九龍 in the map bellow, where you will find the location of almost all the monuments classified as grade I, II and III. Besides, I have selected some spots presented by the Jason Wordie's book "Streets: Exploring Kowloon (HKU Press, 2007). The spots are classified by grades, and distinguished by the ones by Jason Wordie.
